BIENVENUE
(English below)
Je dédie cette page a
LOUIS "Dit Le Sabotier" GUERTIN,

WELCOME
I dedicate this page to
LOUIS "Dit Le
Sabotier" GUERTIN.
He was the first Guertin to come to North America
and he is the origin of all the Guertin families in the new world.
Our first descendant to "Nouvelle France" is credited, along with
other recruits,
with saving Ville-Marie in 1653 from the constant
Iroquois attacks.
At the time Ville-Marie, later to become Montréal, was a newly
established religious mission on the St-Lawrence river
and it was struggling to survive with
only a few handful of inhabitants left.
Louis, was recruited from France by Governor Maisonneuve in what is known as "La Grande Recrue de 1653"
Maisonneuve left Ville-Marie for France in 1651 with a mission to recruit 200 men to save the colony or to abandon it if he failed.
He returned two years later with 100 men and 14 women including Marguerite Bourgeoys who would become Canada's first female Saint in 1982.
Many individuals are of particular interest to me in this tree. There is of course
Louis "dit Le Sabotier" Guertin
but also some patriotes from the rebellions of 1837-38, such as François-Xavier Guertin and Étienne Guertin.
François-Xavier, along with 57 others, was deported to Australia Article from Australia Explained.
Étienne, who was from Beloeil, died at the battle of Saint-Charles sur Richelieu in Quebec, Canada in 1837.
Also in this tree there are more than 130 "Filles du Roy".
The Filles du Roy, or King's Daughters, were some 770 women who arrived in the colony of New France
between 1663 and 1673, under the financial sponsorship of King Louis XIV of France.
Their role was to marry and populate the colony.
